Maurice’s Story

Maurice, a student at Butler University, joined Waukegan to College in 2017 as a high school freshman. Maurice graduated from Waukegan High School in 2021, and his goal is to become not only the first in his family to go to college but to become a doctor.

I didn't know anyone who went to college. I didn't know how to get to college, what it took to get there, the steps to get there... I just didn't know where to start. Then I joined Waukegan to College, and that is when things started taking off." At Waukegan to College, he continues to have the support of his mentor and the strong relationships with our program staff to grow with him as he completes each year of school. Maurice deeply benefited from our wraparound volunteer model, which features specialized help in essay writing, interviewing, financial aid and scholarship guidance, and the college search process overall. "It makes me feel proud that I can break a generational curse.
